I found these at a local thrift store. They were with a 2 piece African birthing chair but I didn't get that because of the price.
These look like the top of a bed post, or large cane/walking stick?
What are these / were they for?
Also, if the round "stopper" at the end of each is correct in that it goes into something else - why is the guy/2nd one upside down?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

I assume it should be 3 parts fitting together: the 2 ends that you have, and the center part containing the medicine. But I'm no expert. I found the pic/answer with Google lens :)

The centre part is bamboo, so maybe they have the missing hollow bamboo tube at your local thrift store. It is worth going back to ask.

And yes, it is Batak. The top one is a Singha, a mythical animal that is important to the Batak. The man is probably the figure of a datu, a Batak shaman.

What do I call it - Indonesia (Batak).top and bottom stoppers of bamboo medicine flask?
I did a google translate on what was on the website & it came back the same as written on website

    • Sumatra
    • Batak (Toba)
    • hout, bamboe
    • h. 61 cm
    • eind 19e – begin 20ste eeuw
    • oude Nederlandse
Is there a common name for them that can help me look up more examples?
    Thank you all!

I found this description on Etsy -

BATAK ARTIFACT SIMALUNGUN container. Featuring two regal Batak figurines riding atop a singa at each container's crown to take away illnesses. Sumatra Indonesia.
Can I call them Simalungun/Indonesia medical/Shaman flask stoppers?

PS - I always thought Batak was a kind of cloth art!

    That is batik.;)
Batak is the name of an ethnic group in Sumatra, Indonesia. There are several sub-divisions, the Simalungun are one of them.
