    20241115_125616.jpg 20241116_151214.jpg 20241116_150307.jpg Good day,

I am new to this forum. I am from South Africa and have just recently found an old brooch in my late mother's collection. I have Googled the pictures of the brooch and it comes up as Edwardian, but I'm not sure? Also, the Maker's Mark is engraved by hand on the brooch. I have taken a close up picture to see if someone may be able to help with an identification.

The marking looks like K25 203?

    Many thanks and warm regards,
    Juliette

I think it’s more likely it’s a stock inventory mark. These were put on by jewellers or pawnbrokers etc.
It’s a beautiful brooch, a lot of jewellery wasn’t hallmarked then.

Ah right! That is very interesting. So it could be Edwardian then! Would the metal possibly be sterling silver? I should perhaps go get it tested then.:) I appreciate your input very much.

Could tthat K25 be 925? (Guess not. Not seeing a 9 there.)

Can you get a side photo of the stone or do you know what it is.

The back is late nineteenth certainly. Looks like an opal doublet but I think it has a crack sadly. Have you cleaned it? Old silver would be tarnished so it’s feasible that it’s white gold.

I agree with obb, late 19th century.
Lovely brooch, and a gorgeous Australian opal doublet or triplet. A side view of the stone will help us see if it is a doublet or a triplet.

I haven't cleaned the metal bit yet. I shall do that tomorrow to see how it comes out. So interesting about the opal, but sad it has a crack. Many thanks !!

I also thought at one point it was a 925 marking, but that's definitely a K?

Take it back to the jeweler and ask them to test the metal.
