Featured Boats painting: old?

    Strange....the back of the canvas doesn't match those bright white modern sides. Was it streched over another piece? That seems super unlikely, especially with such small margin on this stretch but... It's so weird. Maybe they did a glaze to it but to what purpose....fakery?

    I wondered about that too. Appears to be artificially aged.

    I hadn't thought of that.... could the canvas be the 'natural' color visible on the back, and the front was painted white as a prep before the painting itself was begun?

    The canvas looks like it's painted white right to the edge. So age on back might be real. Look at the corner in the last photo. It looks like the paint is knocked off, and the underlying canvas is more like the color of the back.

    In that case, it might be a linen canvas, which is naturally darker.

    That darker canvas on newer works is usualy found on European paintings. Can't say I know the exact source but you really don't see it here.
