These were both on the 'Free' table at the end of last weekend's antique / vintage show. They were interesting so I grabbed 'em.

I'm just curious what they might be.

A: 10" x 4.5" (25x11cm) metal grid (only horizontal strips underneath the 2-directional top) mounted on stained wood; old-school green felt feet

B: partial wood rake / pitchfork? 6 12" (30cm) 'teeth'; 5.5 x 2.5" 'base', all of it careful fitted and matched

Thank you for any ideas on this absurd endeavor!

the grid looks like homemade... ( nicely..) art of a sort !:)
I can discern no use for the bottom slats..... otherwise..

Yeah thanks-- you can't put anything narrow in the grid, like a pencil etc, and have it stay upright. Absent a similar 'box' on the bottom, anything you put in there just slides until it's nearly laying down.

    It's unusual!

There's always the Martyrdom of St. Lawrence, who was grilled:

But I guess it's too small for that.

Perhaps the grid is a shop class trivet for Mom, practicing riveting/soldering.

Trivet is a good idea. Put the hot casserole right on there.

Speaking of grilling--- best fish I've ever cooked: I grilled two fillets of salmon I caught on cedar planks. Glazed in brown sugar and other stuff. I had soaked the planks in water beforehand, but in the last minutes of cooking, they caught on fire. Flames! I thought my salmon was ruined, but in fact, the brief burn made a carmelized, mildly charred crust on the outside of the otherwise perfectly cooked fish. It was delicious.

A happy accident I'll never be able to repeat.

    I agree.
The top one looks like a Trivet, or cooling rack for pies and cakes. I was looking for one yesterday when I had a cake fresh out of the oven and wanted it to cool fast so I could frost it. Was wanting to put it on the enclosed front porch and didn't want to put it directly on the wooden table. I eventually found a trivet, but a cooling rack like that would have been perfect.

Plenty big enough. If centered, only 2 1/4" overhang on each long side, 1 1/2" the other. The cake pan won't droop.

Baking racks are really a life saver if you constantly run behind like me and gotta cool the baked goods fast. I put off buying some for forever, and then when I finally did they were cheap and amazing.

nahhh, I like to see the thing I'm placing a hot pan on...
2 1/4..both sides... only if you could see the end of the grate to keep it entered...but you can't...
