Something I picked up at a watch-&-clock fair in town today. It's a solid silver chatelaine-fob and watch chain, made out of silver coins.

From top to bottom, the coins are...

    10 Pesetas - 1885 - Kingdom of Spain.
    20 Cents - 1894 - Newfoundland.
    25 Cents - 1892 - Republic of Mexico.
    2 Marks - 1900 - German Empire (Hamburg, specifically).
    50 Cents - 1899 - Newfoundland.

    ...with my pocketwatch attached:

...and wearing it on my belt. There's no hook or clasp, or anything, so it's simply held in place by friction and weight.

...and as you can see, it's plenty weighty!...

This particular chain, yes. Each link has a little lion-passant.

Man that must've been a lot of work!! Feel sorry for the assay-marker!

I've not got time to go through them all but those coins don't look genuine to me.

Non have any wear and the hairlines high points are just too good.

For example the Newfoundland 1894 20 Cent if real is a $1200 coin with only 100,000 struck, why would you destroy such a valuable coin by soldering silver to it.

is it possible when this item was made.... that those coins were not yet worth that kind of money...??

    they do look crisp....

Silver-coin jewelry was very popular in the early 1900s. I've seen bracelets, cufflinks, belts, necklaces, belt-buckles, brooches, watch-fobs, etc, all made of old silver coins.

It wouldn't surprise me if what Komo says is right - that it was made back in like, the 1900s, when these coins were still relatively new, and turned into a watch-fob. It would explain why there's no wear on them, because they weren't passed around everywhere for 50 years or whatever.

The guy I bought it from didn't know any of the history, except that everything was solid silver.

I don't know enough to be sure either way. I'd have wandered off with it for the right price!

As far as silver watch-chains go, it was pretty cheap.

Inexpensive, cheap, whatever...a discount of nearly 50% is good in anybody's books, especially when it was already super cheap.

I've collected coins for well over 60 years, I've seen more coin bracelets and coin jewellry than you have had hot dinners, and seen and handled many fakes.

That chain was not put together in the early 1900's.

I posted your pictures on CoinTalk.
Here are some of the responses.

Every one of those coins has the look of a contemporary Chinese fake, IMHO. The coloring, the letters, the dentils.

To me the loops for mounting look too good for an old piece.

On the second pic down, the first two images those are definitely fake!

I'm not criticising you I'm trying to help you.

As I've said before when you are going out buying coins that are cheap you must take a Rare Earth Magnet with you to test the silver.

Also take an ordinary magnet to check if the coins are magnetic, if so they are not silver.

Well I'm not a coin collector in general, I collect silver and general antiques. Unfortunately, carrying a magnet around with me all the time just isn't practical. But thanks for the insight. Even if they are real, or not real, what's been done to them would render them worthless anyway, so I'm not too bothered.

    & I'm trying to learn....

.......if FAKE... why would you destroy such a valuable coin by soldering silver to it., instead of trying to market it as authentic .... for a payoff ???

Many millions are churned out in China and Vietnam daily.
For the punter the first test is a magnet, the second test is weight on gram scales.
When soldered to a chain, weight comparison becomes impossible.
    Made to deceive.

Well they're not magnetic, I can tell you that much. Either way, I think it's cool. If it's breaking some site rule against posting fake stuff, then feel free to delete it.

The fakes can be educational too.
