How would you describe this piece? One opinion is that it is a remnant (blanket stitched?). I like the three dimensional perspective, with the horse looking towards the viewer. I also like the military theme - Napoleonic uniforms - French? There is glare off the glass, but colors are vibrant. Thanks. It does look like the design has been cut out of a larger piece of petit point done on canvas, which has been mounted on a newer piece of cloth. The "blanket stitch" describes the stitching around the edges of the design. This was done to keep the edges from unravelling, but would probably not been have been used in the original work. Without its original context it would be difficult to suggest a probable date based on subject matter alone.

Glare off the glass? So it's framed? Please post a photograph of the piece including frame from both front and back. And, as above... This is an international forum. In what part of the world did you find it? What were you told about it?

The almost look like Napoleonic era soldiers. Russian ones? How old the embroidery is I"m not sure.

It came out of a shop in Wilmington, NC, 20+ years ago, in the frame it is now in. A rough looking frame compared to the work. As I recall the cloth backing (the work is stitched to) had edges folded over onto a piece of wood/panel and glued to (at least) the back. Cleanly secured/glued(?) to the board. I don't recall the condition of back of the frame. The work was pressing up against the glass so spacers were used to move it back some. Can't photo the reverse without taking apart.... IMG_20241012_121927.jpg IMG_20241012_122208.jpg IMG_20241012_122629.jpg IMG_20241012_122439.jpg ....The dimension of the piece on the board, placed into the frame back is 7 by 14-1/2in. The outer dimension of the frame is 16-3/8 by 11-1/2 inches. I think it was $125, no history offered, just caught my eye. The shop also had French/German pieces, a very large Wedding Shrank.

The reverse of the framed piece. You don't have to open the frame up.

Hope these help, the frame shop added the mat board, and really glued the paper backing onto back frame. Thanks for your interest. IMG_20241012_140315.jpg IMG_20241012_140428.jpg IMG_20241012_122558.jpg
