Featured Unusual brooch back

    Bought this brooch recently, mainly because I was intrigued by the back! It seems overly ornate for something that isn't really seen. I like the leaf which is overlaid on the pin back. No idea what the scrolled heart would be for, it's firmly fixed & doesn't move - maybe just to stop it flopping inwards at the bottom?
    The brooch measures just over two inches across.

    Is that very dark brass/silver ? It almost looks like iron or steel-but my eyeballs are old.

    It's darkish brass - the lighting wasn't that great when I took the photos!

    Thanks- OwnByBear shared a fascinating piece of 19th century steel jewelry,it's v. rare and $$$.
