    hi folks

i picked up this quite nice eggshell porcelain bowl last week in a chazza, amazingly damage free, given how delicate it is
i'm sure if i remember right the cross in a square is the mark for kutani, but not sure about the rest
i'm guessing meiji period but could be a bit later

    any thought or info appreciated

Charlie-That's a gorgeous piece-would you say entirely hand painted,or transfer augmented w/ hand painting ?
    PS-Looks like you've got a nice deck mate (& sun ?).

think its all hand painted buddy, maybe a bit of air brushing to the centre of the bowl for the moon

gawd knows how it remained undamaged being sent to a thrift

You've could've copped it for a penny but the real miracle would've been surviving the ham-handed tossers in the back room !

I agree, early 20th century Taisho period
I think the mark simply reads "Kutani made."
    And a beautiful example!
    Great job Charlie!

I can see why they call it 'Eggshell Kutani'.

I think a lot of the breakages come from things being dumped in bin bags outside. Lovely bowl. I bought a full kutani tea set a while ago and I've never managed to sell it as it's local pick up only. I know if I posted it, it would be destroyed.

found this 4 piece set as well last week, not antique but quite nicely made, only just found out they are lithopane or something, they have like a geisha portrait (not shown) in the centre of the cups

Ha ha. There used to be a tenant at work who got those three bottle boxes. They can be used for most plates and all sorts. I raid the bin room for boxes regularly. Have you come across the inflatable columns? They are bullet proof and I'm tempted to buy a shed load.

those tube packing look well worth a try ;)

I've never bought a roll of the stuff so I don't know what it's like to inflate. I've found a few of them for bottles though and they are great for vases. Think I'll buy a roll and see how it goes.

One thing we couldn't find in the UK was true high-octane 'Scrumpy'.The cider was excellent-tastes like true apple juice over there.

It can be found, but not really on tap. In a bar I frequent in the city centre they store it in a fridge in the back room in 5L containers. It is flat as a witches nipple and has the odd thing floating about. Not sure what percentage it is because it is still fermenting in the glass. I've known three pints to fell people. Not my tipple fortunately.

we get a certain type here, can get it in our local store in a ceramic jar. i've always found the devon type a bit pissy smelling though, with loads of sediment at the bottom

    wouldn't recommend ;)

Sounds genuine enough. The stuff I know is decanted from this type of bottle

Thanks gents-I was wondering if true Scrumpy was alcohol-wise more like US hillbilly pot still moonshine (40% to 80% ABV depending on how it's produced).

I must pitch in my 2 cents. When on my birthday trip in 2018, we stayed at a farm in Normandy. Our first night there the proprietress welcomed us with 2 bottles of cider, pressed from the apples grown on the farm. I have never tasted such heaven before or since. Tiny bits of sweet apple floating in it and I will tell you it had a slow but unmistakable kick! I'd give a bundle for a bottle today!
