Someone sent me this picture of a shopping street in the centre of York.
It is known as The Shambles

Some of the structures may have changed a bit, as York was heavily bombed in just 90 minutes in 1942.
84 tonnes of bombs were dropped killing 90 civilians and destroying 9500 houses and buildings.

I just love the children walking up the street . It must be wonderful to live in a place so rich in history.

    Wonderful images Davey.
We spent time in London & Oxford last month-a truly awesome country that doesn't preserve it's food w/sugar & embalming fluid (red dye no. 7).
The damn stuff they find mudlarking for free on the public beaches is enough to put most of our thrift stores to shame.
I'd be there or the Continent in a shot if we weren't enslaved to Medicare.

It doesn't look like it's changed much. My son just returned from a trip to London, his first abroad, and he was struck by the overwhelming sense of a long history that you don't get much of here. Maybe a little in Boston, but just a little.

I had the same feelings in Italy, but a little more ancient there.

The USA just doesn't have the historical record in physical form. There were people here 500 years ago, but there isn't much physically left from that time except the paths of a few roads.

Yes, but for the cost we could have taken a trip around the world.

This is probably our most famous 16th Century street in Norwich U.K.
Elm Hill, saved from slum clearance in the 1920s by the Norwich Society. Home now to a Teddy Bear Shop, Stamp and Medals shop, various antique shops, posh hairdressers etc

I often felt we'd dropped into a movie set over there-Regency,Tudor,Neolithic,Norman.
    On a Cotswold hike,nipped into a hay-strewn barn for a bit of relief:sorry:.
On exiting I spied a small sign-'Lacock Tithe Barn-14th Century'...hmm-not the first or last.

I love York and I love the Shambles!
Last time I visited that area was in 2015. My daughter and I stayed at The Golden Fleece right near the Shambles. We loved the few days we spent in York. :)
