    Hi guys,
I've had this pup for years but have no idea where he might be from, or when he was made. I thought maybe vintage Chinese because the big hole in the base but really, I don't know. I'm not sure how to tell if the dog is applied to the base or part of one mold. He's 8 inches long and 6.5 inches tall or 20.32 by 19.5cm.
He's kind of heavy at 2 pounds 4 oz. Looks like sponged spots and painted features.
I'd love some info on him if anyone knows, but pedigree or mutt, still one of my favorite things. Thanks! DSC_Dog1.jpg DSC_dog2.jpg DSC_dog3.jpg DSC_dog bottom.jpg

Yes, looks Chinese,.. or is it English trying to look Chinese? First impressions. I love the eyes. I would have to hold it in my hands.

Not British, but I'd have him/her on my shelf! It has quite a lot of character so maybe Chinese, maybe someplace else.

Thanks ya'll. Any guess on age? It's easier to tell the age on glass, but what do you look for on ceramics or pottery?

Big question, LOL! Some centuries old ceramics can look brand new and some new stuff is artificially aged.

Wow, think I'll just stick to collecting glass, and the occasional stray pottery piece. Thanks!

I’d have thought a vintage attempt (possibly Chinese) at replicating an antique Staffordshire piece. However if Kent says it’s not British then I guess it’s probably not.

Now watch that someone finds out it is British!:hilarious: However, Staffordshire dogs and figures and flatbacks have been copied for so long that many copies are antiques themselves. One of the companies that made many replicas in the early 20th c was called Kent, LOL.

Large hole in base indicates slip casting so mid 20th century onwards perhaps.

That’s very true. Quite a while ago I posted a link here to a YouTube account about Staffordshire. The lady was an expert on the subject. She had a great series of videos about identifying not only authentic original Staffordshire but also distinguishing earlier British copies from newer Chinese copies.

Edit: pretty sure this is the gal

Am I the only one thinking this is more modern than old? Something about the stain on the base is giving me modern vibes.

You're probably right. Modern being what though, 90's plus?

Yes, that brushed brown on the base always makes one think of Southeast Asian factories with their attempt to "age" something. However, I paused from remarking on it because the modelling and decoration are quite carefully done. But yeah, could be latter part of the 20th c and Southeast Asian.

Ah, ok. Good to know about that faked brown stain. It did fool me in to thinking it was older. :sorry:

Thanks, FT3. I'm quite found of it myself, even if it is only worth a few bucks.
