Is this candle stick a piece of tourist ware or is it antique? I think it is slipware. 10.jpg 14.jpg 15.jpg

It's real slipware, and I don't think it's Old old. Vintage old probably - 40 years or more, but not 200.

It’s a souvenir from Salou, in Catalunya. It reads Rdo which is is short for recuerdo (souvenir) of El Sotano, which was a bodega there.

Catalan places have a lovely habit of giving favoured customers little things like this.

Just want to add that "el sotano" means "the basement"

Maybe 'The Cellar' would be a kinder translation.

Agree. Although in Spanish that's more commonly translated as la bodega.

I loved old fashioned Catalan bodegas. Most have vanished now. You could take an empty bottle along and get it filled with whatever you fancied, straight from the barrel. If you sat in to drink, it was also drawn from the barrel.

And, in the old days, the bottle was worth more than the wine!

Indeed. My ma used to take an empty sherry bottle from home when we drove down. The bodegas did excellent sherry.

My preference is manzanilla. (Not that anyone asked!)
