Help me Identify

This is the front. Looks handmade, is brass. See side view, cannot figure out what it is, what it was made for. Was from a woman who died long ago, traveled the world. Was given to me by her surviving relative who is also since gone. He did not know anything about it either.

      This belonged to a woman who traveled the world, she purchased both new and ancient items from the various places she went. She died in the 70's. Her surviving relative gave it to me, at the time he had no idea what is was either. He is since gone as well. Was it once a bracelet? Necklace? At first I thought it a box to open. It's not. Looks handmade, is brass. When you hold it, "feels" like it was very important to someone. Need to know more about it. Please help.
