Hello from Australia! I was recently gifted this repoussé bowl with a double-headed eagle holding a sceptre and orb. There are no markings, but I was told that it was silver-plated. It's 12cm D, 4cm H and 123g. Could it be from Moscow, Russia, at the beginning of World War I or a later version? What is its value? What was the purpose/use of the bowl? Thank you in advance for any assistance. Kind regards, Brekkon.

Regarding the double-headed eagle: It is a symbol that originated in pre-historic times in Asia and Europe.
It can be found mostly in countries or organisations that have a link with the Byzantine empire or the Holy Roman Empire. That means most of Europe and part of Asia (but not only there).
So when you find a double-headed eagle on an item, always look at the attributes and look closely at the shape of the crowns (if present). Also if there is an extra crest on its chest.
As so often, the devil is in the detail.;)

Thank you for your insight. I have seen different variations of the crest, some have the eagles also wearing crowns with a central chest crest. It sure is a pickle. I wonder how old my bowl is.

Does anyone know how old this bowl is? I suppose it's safer to say it's European rather than trying to contribute to a particular region.
