Bought this mahjong "set", including dice, chips and 4 (heavy) racks, during my summer vacation. It was sold as complete, but only after getting back home it turned out not to be complete and to have tiles from (at least) 2 different sets ... Impossible to return now, and disappointed that it isn't complete, but still loving the tiles and the carvings, and curious to know more about origin, age and material.

those tiles are lovely, especially with the turquoise colour, nicest ones i've seen, cool box as well

don't really know the game, how can you tell they are a mixed set, as the colour of the bakelite is pretty uniform, and would expect variations in colour in they were mixed

one type has the green back (side view visible in the 5th pic), and the other type is larger and is uniform butterscotch (8th pic is the back of one of those)

Neither do I. That's why I didn't count the tiles when I bought the game ... :( If I had at least known that there should be 144 tiles, I would have counted them, and while counting I would most likely have noticed that there were different sizes :sour:

:( The seller probably had no idea either. At least it is a very decorative box, and the tiles look nice.
My guess is Cantonese or Cantonese style, with that carving. Is it actual carving, or is it resin?

The boy is hiding behind the elderly gent, and the woman is holding a big stick. A nasty story is unfolding right before our eyes.:nailbiting:

Probably not. Going to send her a message later today, to see what she has to say about it.
Even more decorative than I thought, because only now (as I went to check if it could indeed be resin) I found out that the other side also has a story to tell

Now I wonder if mine is a collection of (at least) 3 different types ... Some of the butterscotch/green tiles are numbered (in Arabic numerals, as I assume they are numbered in Chinese) and others aren't. First I thought only the tiles with Chinese writing had those numbers, but now I've seen that some have Chinese writing and no numbers

Just for interest sake.. Where did you go for your summer vacation? Was this bought in like an antique or collectibles shop or what was the set-up?

Ok. Well that’s cool. Didn’t really spend any time inspecting it before buying? Did you buy it on the run,30 sec flat.. :)

Portugal. It was bought at an antique shop (near Lisbon), as a double last-minute buy, as the owner was about to close the shop for her lunch break, and I was about to go to the north of Portugal (got back from the store, placed the bag in the car, got in the car and off we went). Hence the lack of time to do some research before buying it, hence the late discovery of the missing tiles and the mix of tiles, hence the impossibility of going back to the store to complain about it :(

Yup, I'm the new record holder for 'quick buys without prior research'. And then I had to break the record for 'getting back home in time to avoid the wrath of your partner and make sure you won't get left behind'

No judgement :).. was wondering about the background story. I really like beautiful Portugal and some great antique shops there. Some proper antiques on sale… Never mess with the Portugese and their eating (it’s serious business)
