Found this interesting coin today. On the one side it reads Fourth Cavalry Exchange and on the other Good For 50 cents. Measures 1 1/4" in diameter. I assume this dates to the mid to late 1800's. Wondering if anyone else has ever seen one for the 4th Cavalry. I know they started in Missouri prior to the Civil war and also spent time in Texas in the later stages of the Civil war and for several years after. I have found a couple of these for the 1st US Cavalry that were specific to South Dakota. i have not been able to locate another of these for the 4th. Just wondering if anyone might have an idea of the age and where they were stationed when these were issued. Thanks

Almost certainly only 50 cents...but I can't see a cent mark, nor any other indicator of unit value, on the reverse as pictured.

Where did you find it? Just curious. Metal detecting, estate sale, grandmas attic?

Belonged to a relative that passed away a couple years ago, found it in a box of various items. He passed in Lancaster County, PA, but where he got it from i do not know, he did quite a bit of traveling all around the globe. He was in the Army at the end of WW2, then went on to retire from the CIA, before ending his career working as a civilian consultant to the Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. so it is really hard to tell where he might have acquired it.

Sounds like an interesting life! At least you know more about it now even if you’ll never know exactly where this particular one’s been.
