    Found this string of beads in a charity shop a couple of days ago. I will re-string them as they're on a tatty bit of cord at the moment.
    The only way I could test them was with baking soda & a cotton bud - there's a picture of the result. Bakelite - or something else? It doesn't really matter to me as I love them anyway and for £1.50 who's to complain. They remind me of polished conkers!

    That looks like a positive test to me :)

    I think the color is called "Mississippi Mud".

    Ding! DingDING! Those are bananas foster bakelite, at least the big beads are. You scored on this one. If that's the original string no wonder it died. Bakelite beads weren't dear at the time and they were strung on cheap cord. After 80 or 90 years it and the beads parted ways.

    Thanks - I tried searching for bananas foster Bakelite but just came up with - recipes for bananas!!
    The string/cord is far from dead - it's as strong as can be so it's maybe not original though it looks old and quite grubby. There is no clasp, the cord was just tied in a knot.
