Komo, I looked up the design in that oriental carpet identifier book that I picked up for free a while back. The book does not include modern rugs, it gives descriptions of the origins of carpet designs. The design in your rug was originally from the beginning of the Ottoman Empire and included animals and birds.

"During the second half of the 15th century, the depiction of merely geometrically patterned pieces became more frequent, especially including variants on the octagon within the style that came to be known as Holbein carpets, or the contrasting octagons and foliate crosses of the Lotto pattern."

Here are some Google images of the Lotto patterns:

It's difficult with handmade rugs. No two are alike. I'm still not sure what my rug is. I'm leaning towards Heriz. (I couldn't find my old post to link)

I am more interested in collecting old Caucasian rugs myself, though I have passing knowledge of other oriental carpets and a few lying around. I didn't comment earlier since I thought Kyratango was exactly right with her comment about it being Turkoman Bokhara (as you can see the spelling of oriental carpets is rather "flexible".

My experience (which I can't give internet citations for so you may want to question and verify) is that the older carpets (pre 20th century) were named based on where they found a particular pattern being made. So Bokhara is a city in Uzbekistan, Heriz a city in Persia/Iran, etc. But then the traders started modifying those patterns based on the colors and designs they knew they could sell, and they started having those designs made where they had makers available, so designs were no longer necessarily made where the designs were originally from. And they started giving exact pixel by pixel patterns to their weavers, which were followed very closely. Yours looks like it is made by someone following a very exact pattern, so not an early Bokhara, but a later post-WW2 rug, possibly made in Uzbekistan but possibly elsewhere, in my opinion.

Now here is a link to an almost identical carpet (but in brighter colors) from a seller of used carpets (I have no experience with this company), described as Bokhara Turkoman, made in Pakistan, wool on wool. They don't give a date, but it looks like they sell their old/antique carpets in a different category, so this is probably late 20th century or so: https://carpetonline.co/tribal/bokhara-turkoman-rug-000414-area-rugs

The one in your pic is a fairly common style, popular in the late 19th and early 20th century up to WW2; I run into them fairly often. In my experience called Sarouk or Farahan or both (again named after city/county in Persia/Iran). I inherited a couple of carpets very similar to this one that were my grandmother's (probably bought in the 1920's/30's).

Thank you! When I started researching it last year, Sarouk, Heriz and Farahan were all on the list of possibilities. I thought the Farahan designs were "finer and had a lower pile and the Sarouk seem to have a lot more coverage and details in the designs. Although, mine might look "finer" if I had it cleaned. Have you cleaned your rugs? Are they heavy? I think mine is approximately 7' by 10' or just slightly under and I can't pick it up by myself.

Sorry, komokwa, for this aside about a different type of rug. I agree yours looks older than the similar ones you and I found; if you look on a map you'll see Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan are all close and bordering each other so all in the same ballpark. I don't know enough to try to pin down exactly where a particular carpet was made, and I think most rug dealers don't either - they are mainly trying to identify the traditional pattern designs that the rugs were made with. Unfortunately by the late 20th century you could find Persian style rugs being made in India and China, etc. and visa versa so the more time that passes the harder that is to do.

No, these were in good shape when I got them and I never took them to be cleaned. They are heavy and dense with close knots and thick pile, more so than the other oriental rugs I find. I will sometimes wash a rug in my bathtub with gentle carpet detergent if it isn't too large then take outside to dry, but these Sarouk type are artificial (not natural) dyes and cleaning them in my bathtub (which I do with some rugs) would make me nervous. I instead take them outside and beat with a rug beater. (This was a traditional way to clean rugs - you might occasionally run into a rug-beater at an old estate or auction). Seven by ten is pretty big and harder to find in good condition; the ones I have are smaller but the designs are just scaled up or down. In case you're curious, below are pics of the two I got from my grandmother (taken inside), and then two others I've run across recently that I am trying to give to my daughter (taken outside):

    Gorgeous carpets/rugs, everyone.:)
Komo, yours looks original Turkmen to me, not Pakistani made. The style has both Tekke and Yomud elements to my inexpert eyes. Both the Tekke and the Yomud are Turkmen tribes.

I have a few old rugs, The oldest is probably my 19thc Sarouk, lighting was a bit uneven when I took the photo but maybe you can still see some detail ..

    sarouk.jpg

My latest old rug, bought about a month ago ...still have to clean it and get the one edge stabilized, I believe this one is early-ish 20thc., a Turkoman Tekke.

    tekkerug.jpg

This last one is a bit of a favourite, Turkish and brought to Canada with an Armenian family in the 50's.

I have a lot more too, several Caucasian pieces incl. an old Kazak and a very fine Karabagh plus a Kirman Ravar and even an old Samarkand. Most are antique and with a few exceptions they do show signs of use as they cover my floor!
