Featured chinese seal

how old is this chinese seal? It is a daoist or taoist seal. 8 x 7,5 x 6 cm

rather large for a seal....could it be a paper weight ?

 

well imperial chinese seals are quite larger

 

it is very cool and the stone is a mystery because it attracts strongly a magnet and containts olivine crystals. meteorite??

 

Ditto,very attractive.With old looking Chinese items,my basic rule of thumb is that they're all brand new.
The Chinese have an ancient tradition of replicating old/ancient pieces as a form of homage,and to test their skills.The highest level replicas are superb pieces of art in their own right.
There's also millions of counterfeits and forgeries produced to make money.Takes a really expert eye & sometimes testing to determine true age.

 

oke, but just for the fun of it, if it was real how old you think it would be?

 

bought it on catawiki and the seller put two date periods 1900-2000 and 1950-1960 . but i think it could be old according the wear and sings of use.

 

Hunt-I'll be posting a pair of Chinese Archaistic Bronze Gu Vases I saw yesterday.I know they're not Shang or Zhou period,but if they were 19th or early 20th century I'd be happy.
Your seals lovely-sorry can't help w/precise dating.It sounds like your seller was being very cautious & up front re their product.

 

yes that is always the case at catawiki because the don't want to get in trouble when the wrongly date it. almost every item is mentioned as 20th century.

once took my antique Chinese vase to a Chinese guy next door to ask if he could read the markings..
He laughed at my vase, saying in China...... if it's not at least 400 years old....... it's no antique !!

They translated an antique bill of sale for me once-in detail,it was great.Here's hoping for Us both that Mr. Nagy's feeling spry this week !

Chinese seal characters are difficult to read, even for literate Chinese people. I can tell you that the characters here are not at all traditional seal characters, particularly because of the decorative flourishes like the little curlicues. My guess is that this is a modern piece not made for actual sealing.

The seal is defently not a fake and has been used allot, judging by all the wear. It is as i mentioned in the beginning a daoist or taoist seal hence the strange caracters and symbols. google it and you will come across a ming dynasty one with the same wear. And it contains red cinebar ink so that proves it is a seal. That is at least my opinion. But translating will be difficult also because of the ninefold script in some parts.

 

Interesting and cool looking item. I like the buddhist lion. The fact that it’s strongly magmatic is almost more intriguing than the seal itself. I honestly don’t know what to really think of it. I have seen with some African stone carvings that its easy to show ‘signs’ of age and ‘wear’ with a few scraps/nicks and chips. Like wise I would think it would be easy to fake the ‘red ink used’ look? Is the whole thing magnetic,top to bottom?
