I just picked up this rather odd helmet. It looks to be fairly old. Very heavy steel construction, about 8.5 lbs. It appears someone replaced or added chin straps at some point. (the rivets are different than the rest of the helmet. It also looks like someone added or repaired a catch button to hold the face shield down. (new pop rivets and piece of metal) Clearly the foam liner was not original to the helmet. Any clues on this???

I'm guessing it might be a SCA reenactors battle helmet.

A modern, poorly made and rather crude, SCA helmet I am afraid. These are made for re enactment combat, with little or no regard to historical accuracy. They are made to be 'battle ready' legal, so one can get out and get fighting ASAP.

I did make some helmets for Regia Anglorum, a British early medieval group. They complained about two things, one, I stamped my work with a small discreet makers mark, which certainly in Viking times was not unknown. And secondly, they objected to my painting the inside black to help protect against rust. This was supposedly on the grounds that this wasn't done in antiquity. But they didn't object to the owners glueing foam inside! How original is that! :rage:
I never bothered to work for them again!

It doesn't look anything like Old to me either, but it does look like someone was a major Python fan.

Thanks all for the info. I guess I will put it on and wack myself in the head with a sword? I just picked it up because I liked the look of it.
