What is the Wedgwood Lid used for?

I picked up this lid today because I thought it would make a nice piece of wall decor. It's about 8" wide and in perfect condition but there is no base!

I've identified this as Wedgwood Liverpool Birds. Is it yellow ware? What was it used for?

Hmm, could be! The seller claims quite a variety of uses for this.I found a different patterned piece, lid only, the seller stated was for meat (no other words!) I'm still not understanding why the center hole is large. Thanks for your answer!

 

It may be an insert for a round butter dish.

The large center hole may be for easier removal from the dish.

 

It seems big for a butter, but I can't think of anything else.

Not meat, those aren’t round. Too big for butter. Looks like a spittoon lid to me.

Thank you all for your replies! I guess a general small strainer or a butter strainer are the more likely choices. If it's s butter strainer, is is used to release melted butter to a bowl below or to chill butter by putting it over a bowl of ice?

 

Churned butter had a lot of whey, hence the drainer.

You may be thinking of a slop jar, but it would only have one big center hole.

 

Nope, I’m thinking a big bar top spittoon.
