Featured Black Spots inside the Rhinestone on Pendant

Hi All, wondering what the black spots are inside the rhinestone on this pendant? I've never noticed something like the before, wondering if it is common. I didn't notice them until l looked at the photos, they are very small. The pendant is about 1 1/2"L, not sure if new or has some age to it.

The back is probably silvered, like an old mirror. That breaks down.

 

That is my impression as well.
Just to be sure, cx, if you look at the crystal from the side, the stone horizontally at eye level, do you still see the spots? If you do, they are likely to be inside the crystal. If you don't, they are specks of disintegrating foil.

 

This is a very good suggestion.

Looking at the 3rd photo (when I enlarge it) it does look like some kind of quartz, those spots appear embedded. But then the next photo looks more like a loss of silvering. Try AJ's suggestion.

What an unusual pendant. I'm wonder how old it is and the origin. It's unusual. Nice!

Yes, looks like it could be rock crystal. Do you see any irisation (rainbow colours) when you move it around in sunlight?

 

I don't know. The area I circled looks transparent but the rest looks foiled. I suspect a rhinestone with the foiling gone in the transparent area. The metal looks like it was cleaned with metal polish and I would worry, if it's a rhinestone, that it got wet in the process and the foiling has been damaged.

I would use a sharp knife or single edge razor blade to gently open up the prongs holding the stone in the setting (wear glasses for safety!!!!!) and look at the back of the stone. You could just do 2 of the prongs on 1 of the long sides. You can easily place the stone back in the setting and fold the prongs back down.
