    Hello everyone,
I just had a closer look at my Whitby jet bracelet, and there are some random numbers and letters inscribed at the back of the snake head. I can understand the Roman number 4 IV, what does the rest of the inscription mean 16, 8 R=d, J , I? How old is this snake bracelet?
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Simona

Those registered marks weren't only used on pottery.;)
While it seems odd to find it on jet jewellery, in this case it makes sense because the snake bracelet was such a specific design.

Very interesting. So based on the tables Komo provide, the bracelet was made in 1880.

Thank you so much, and thank you @komokwa as well, it’s fantastic that you could pin down the year and am grateful for sharing it. My understanding that the J determines the year 1880.
Should I take it further and presume 16th August 1880 or 16th July? ❤️
Is there a maker that we could assign this bracelet to?
I have seen one similar in Oxford, UK…here

This looks reddish to me....I've only seen black Whitby jet....could it be cherry amber? Is there reddish Whitby jet? Thanks.

It’s a reflection, There must have been something reddish in the room when I’ve taken the photos.xx
