Featured Hamilton & Inches silver Quaich

The luckiest charity shop find in a very long time!!
I can’t quite believe the hallmark was missed, all I can think is that because there wasn’t an English lion on it they thought it was plate?
Thanks to @MrNate and his useful little quizzes a while ago, I was able to spot it was likely silver before i’d turned it over.
Hamilton and Inches makers mark and does that r look like 1898?
I’ve seen the two handled Scottish bowls described as Quaiches but is a three handled one still a Quaich?
I think they are black faced highland sheep on the handles as they have the curly horns.
It’s c6” across.

Thankyou Johnny, I was bemoaning that there hadn’t been anything in the charity shops for ages and then there it was!

 

A 3 handled bowl is called a Tyg.. used same way as a quaich suspect it is easier to hand around ...a fantastic find and also by a good silversmith . Well done.

H&I are still in business and all looks to be high end stuff, still selling the quaiches, but also some Lalique and lovely pieces.

Lovely lovely lovely. I especially love the handles. It’s a great look to a great piece and BRAVO for having the eye to look closer! This warms my heart more than anything to see others finding their own treasures.

Those are some strange looking sheep but I love a figural handle of any variety.

DINGDINGDING! We old boardies would know those marks, but I can imagine a British charity shoppe misquoting an old line from Saturday Night Live (if I remember properly, and I haven't watched it in 25 years so....) "It's either Scottish or it's crap!" Except they'd say English. No lion mark so not silver... heh,heh heh.

They don't look like blackfaced sheep, or any other sheep imo.
At the time the blackfaced sheep were not very popular in Scotland because the devastating Highland Clearances were still fresh in everyone's memory.
Blackfaced sheep are not of Scottish origin, they were introduced from south of the border by rich landowners who thought sheep more profitable than people. That led to the Highland Clearances: Many crofters (tenant farmers) in the Highlands were evicted and forced to migrate, and the English blackfaced sheep came in their place.
The Highlands and Islands are still riddled with ruins of crofts.

Don't the faces have tusks of some sort? Probably mythical animals.
