s-l1600 (85).jpg s-l1600 (83).jpg s-l1600 (84).jpg While doing some research for a thread on Antiquers I came across a Tahan French Boulle Jewellery Box, this lead me on a path of looking up Tahan boxes, while I was looking I saw a gold and black lacquered box by Tahan and by chance I had already put one quite like it in my watch list. Today I won the unmarked box in my watch list for £5, I know they are listed as Burmese, Japanese and all around the world but seeing one that's clearly labelled Tahan means I might just have a good bargain? What do members think?
    Ebay labelled one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/145741620614?itmmeta=01HX85HA4FZ1WJM96N5RH3BPD7&hash=item21eee0a586:g:Et4AAOSwtgJk5yMS&itmprp=enc:AQAJAAAAwH2xi/rxBbyMILSXCGnCDyymJPN7Jrz1cXF6BySnX5E6FOQvMTnsg+nETV9fTXCtkBycv5hMFWgiBasPszP5oitq3olpop7BKYmlJYrFIhVRQQqP90Qm7QTfpBv18FwQg+ca8lLu235+Jcn+NzoC+7vuRtUtXPReYT/0G+MpefXoLwCzDNprF9UWudTEM5MF+a1McAgJhSdFHBx3Xix6CHa4k+RZIuLTYyU4M4DtxpoTL47UmWoMr1IlPp0VJaK/HQ==|tkp:Bk9SR7aixYXqYw

I don't know this name; all I know is what I see when I search it online. Based on that, which is really lame and entirely unreliable, I don't see this as being in aTehan taste.

I think they only made one off boxes, from my research I couldn't find two of the same but the artistic style of the one I bought and the labelled Tahan one on ebay looks similar but it doesn't mean my one is Tahan just I think they may have been made in the same region? place? factory? person? or may have been commissioned by Tahan? The one in the liveauctions went for $100, that seems high for a Japanese one.

Your box is a lovely Burmese lacquered betel box.
It is very likely that Tahan imported similar boxes, but without the Tahan label yours isn't one of them. Besides, I think your box is much too recent to have been sold by Tahan.

An antique Burmese black and gold lacquer box, different shape but with similar designs:

To my eye that one is very different from yours. It is a classic Japanese box with a very Japanese landscape, yours has Burmese floral and scrollwork.

Sorry my link went to another box and I can't show photos of the box I meant even though I've downloaded them :( The Japanese box wasn't what I was trying to show.
May I ask, (so I know for the future) how can you tell the age? I often see some boxes well looked after and some of the same age ruined. I was going by patterns and could only find 3 that had very similar patterns, 1 I bought 2 this ebay Tahan one and a 3rd that I can't show :( ebay one and the auction one are both around s-l1600.jpg s-l1600.jpg s-l1600.jpg $100

Fashionable shapes, which are difficult to know if you don't see many of them, but this one is easier: the wear and patina on the lacquer.

So the Tahan box is also yours? $100 Is a good price for an antique Burmese lacquer betel box with a Tahan refence.
And the more recent one is a steal for £5.

Clearly I'm not doing very well communicating today lol I re-wrote the thread a few times as well. No the Tahan lacquer box on ebay isn't mine (but I did buy a Tahan Boulle Jewellery Box, see picture) The £5 unmarked lacquered box photoed at the top of the page is mine. I was trying to find other lacquered black and gold boxes with the same sort of pattern as mine and the only ones I could find were the ebay Tahan box and the one I can't post, I'll try taking a screenshot. s-l1600 (77).jpg s-l1600 (76).jpg s-l1600 (78).jpg

Yes, and yes. Tahan wouldn't be the first French* business to sell beautiful Asian boxes. In the late 19th and early 20th century, quite a few perfume makers used Japanese lacquer boxes as gift boxes.

Oh, you two make me nostalgic -- I worked with kids with ADD, ADHD and occasionally dyslexia. Kept me hopping, but lots of laughs, too!

That is great, kent. So you are probably one if the few people who know there is a difference between ADD and ADHD. We tend to be thrown on the same pile, but although there are some similarities, there are probably more differences. In our family we have a few of both.

Your child daydreams a lot at school and is easily distracted when they are doing homework or chores. Maybe they fidget constantly. You might wonder if they have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Or is it attention deficit disorder (ADD)?

    Is there a difference?

Not anymore. In 1994, doctors decided all forms of attention-deficit disorder would be called "attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder," or ADHD, even if the person wasn't hyperactive. Now it's called ADHD, inattentive type, or ADHD, hyperactive/impulsive type, or ADHD, combined type.

Yep, loads of these lacquered boxes out there, don't know why I didn't find them before. Typed in "black and gold box" and found loads. I think I'll stick to what I know lol
