Featured Bali? painting/print info

hi folks

found this in a charity shop yesterday for £2. thought it was interesting looking, and has been professionally framed

presumed it was some kind of print, but looking closer i think it might be all hand drawn

theres lines that go outside the borders

a quick image search suggests its from bali ?

haven't taken it out of the frame yet, so behind glass

any thoughts or info appreciated

Yes, it is hand drawn/painted, from the village of Batuan, Bali. It is a scene from a Barong dance.
The Batuan style is my favourite style. It is always nice quality. The people of Batuan (nearly) all belong to the priestly caste, and most of their subjects are religious, as is this one.

Barong is the ruler of the forest animals. He can change into any animal shape, but his favourite transformation is the lion. He fights against the "bad guys", in this case spirits beings who are possessed by Rangda, an evil widowed queen. A fight of good against evil.
Barong is on the right, the top figure is the possessed spirit. I forgot what they are called, something with 'Le'. If I remember I'll post it here.

 

I remembered, Leyaks. They cause disease, miscarriages, and all sorts of other life-threatening events.

i'm presuming you'll never really nail down an artist for these types

It is, but a quality painting, made with the proper prayers. So more than your average souvenir.

 

thats good news , you can tell that whoever did it has taken their time and not just hacked something out
