What is the work (name?) carved into the bench the man is sitting on?

Has an Italian look to me.

I would assume the light has been added. Does that appear to be the case?

La Bastide, which is in the Limousin region of France. So it is French, although the couple isn't wearing local dress.
Limousin is where Limoges is situated, Limoges is the capital.

It just says Sarlat, not Sarlat-la-Canéda. I assumed Sarlat was the maker's name, but it could be a generic souvenir, origin unknown but sold in various tourist towns in different countries. Wouldn't be the first example of such a souvenir.;)
