My mother bought this oil painting on board in the 70s, but after a few years she gave it to me. I didn't mind.
It went with me to my student digs and has always had a place on my wall.

The subject looks to be the entrance to an Indonesian market. A few ladies near the entrance, two coming, two leaving, and one seller sitting in the foreground.
I am sure it was painted not too long before it was bought in the mid-70s.
My only issue with the painting is the usual one, the signature.

So if any of you can help me make sense of the siggy, I will be eternally grateful.:)
The painter's name could be Dutch. I think I see 'Hessaart', which isn't a Dutch name, but sounds Dutch. The initial could be a T.

    Thank you for looking.:)

(No picture of the back, I didn't trust myself to take it off the wall.)

Thank you, Roaring. That makes it clearer, but unfortunately the artist used such a thick brush that it is still difficult to make sense of.
Yes, it is. In fact it was seeing a painting of Ohl for sale that prompted me to post mine here.;)
Another Dutch-Indonesian artist who painted in a similar style was Gerard Pieter Adolfs. Adolfs was also known as the "master of light".
Both Adolfs and Ohl were painters of the "Mooi Indië School", a Dutch East Indies colonial era school of painting.

The sites below are in Dutch, but the beautiful paintings speak for themselves.:)

    Lucien Frits Ohl:

    Gerard Pieter Adolfs:

I think 'my' painter was inspired by Adolfs and Ohl, and it is very likely that he or she was also Dutch-Indonesian.

Thanks, Chin.:) Only there don't seem to be enough long strokes to form the b and either l or t.

Yeah the b is missing isn't it? Maybe first initial T and surname beginning with H hmmmm

I do, but I don't know for sure that it is a Dutch name.;) It could be an Indonesian name, although it doesn't seem to be. It could also be a non-Dutch European name.

Many of these painters were Dutch-Indonesian, Indo, which is a term given to anyone of mixed Dutch East Indies and European ancestry.
Many of the usual Indo surnames are Portuguese, Scottish, German, Swiss, and French as well as Dutch. To complicate things, some surnames are "Dutchified" Indian names, from the former Dutch colonies in India.

Thanks Roaring.:) I could give them a try, but I know the Zeeuws Veilinghuis, it is much more up market than my humble painting. Most of their bidders are rich Singaporeans and ditto Chinese.

A couple of years I did give my brother a link to the Zeeuws Veilinghuis, and told him to auction my keris collection through them in event of my passing.;)
