The only left to do now is to clean the fly poop & nicotine off w/ q-tips & saliva (the wet cherry on top !). I don't think we've seen many California Impressionist (Monterey) pieces here-nice.

Yeah-- neither here on antiquers or in our common home state. This one is clearly signed and the store had it correctly labeled, but the price was relatively affordable.

I've read about CA Impressionists taking road trips up the West Coast all the way to Canada,so there's prob a few pieces still hanging in the Portland area.Just takes the right place & time.

Definitely Jackson Lake and part of Grand Tetons. I think that of the different peaks, that is Grand Teton Peak.

Thanks! I was just looking at a map of the Teton Range, and I think you're right: the peak is likely Grand Teton itself.

Quite a few nice CA impressionist paintings available on ebay. Back when I first started on ebay, you could buy unresearched paintings pretty cheap. I bought several that I was able to identify and correctly relist on ebay for quick profit. Now they are no longer as affordable but there is always a pretty good selection.

There are over 7K that come up searching CA impressionist in ebay right now......

In the greater scheme of things, I dont think either of us are spending all that much on art. Big time dealer/collectors are spending multi thousands, not hundreds. I mostly buy cheap/bargain artworks in the hopes of turning a buck here and there. I do buy what I like and occasionally will spring several hundred for something for myself. The painting I just bought will go on my wall. Whether or not it was a bargain, remains to be seen. I can find no real information on the artist, so it is hard to evaluate.

True story: Back in the early 90s, I had bought a few pieces of art here and there but nothing significant up to that point. I was actively dealing in the arts and crafts period furnishings and attended the Toomey-Treadway auction in Chicago a few times. I also bought their catalogs regularly. They had begun featuring art that fit with the period and most paintings they sold were under $10K. Viewing their catalogs and attending their auctions, I became more interested in art. I had bid on one painting up to $600.00 but was outbid.

About this same time, I registered with ebay and began buying for inventory. At some point, I turned my focus to all the art that was being offered on ebay. I quickly recognized that there were some quality paintings being offered for far less than what I was seeing at Toomey-Treadway. I decided to become an art collector.

Not wanting to mix business money with art collecting, I turned to a jar of change I had been collecting for a few years. Taking it to the bank, I netted just over $1200.00 from it. This became the seed money for my art collection. Over the next several months, I managed to buy 20 or so works. From there, I began to sell some of my purchases back on ebay after research and proper listing. I continued to buy and never looked back. While that jar of change became the seed for my art collection, I did eventually add more money and include art purchases among my business finances.

Today, my collection/inventory numbers more than 300 works of art. I don't really know the exact number. It may well be closer to 500 for all I know. Among those works are a few from that first 20 or so I bought on ebay. I still like and display them after all these years. My focus has changed over the years. I no longer buy much on ebay, nor am I currently selling there. I buy art for pennies on the dollar, with the occasional splurge for myself.

Fascinating. Would love to see an example of how you display your collection.

I love this story. Thanks for that too.

I am also "playing with house money" so to speak. I made an initial investment in this hobby of mine, financed by a literal second job I (still) work beyond my regular salary, and I calculate my available funds based on that. It feels great, and is otherwise independent of our household finances. That means I never have to explain or justify that I bought "another one of those" --no matter what the another one is. ;);):D:D
