Conveniently, they call the look of the most standard lab opal "lizard skin" so it's fitting! They always use it in pieces that have these divided sections in them. The quickest way to tell is if you can see the side...the lab opal grows in pretty straight columns.

Most people can't tell, and don't care otherwise, because it's really sparkly and beautiful on its own. I have pieces myself and always get compliments. We all love a lil glitter!

 

i appreciate its hard to tell from photos as well mirana, i sort of knew it was too good to be true from the colour

i still really like it though and more than happy to wear it

 

i think thats the difference between being interested in jewelry as a selling point or being interested in jewelry as a wearing point

Colour isn't anything to go by, I have seen many natural opals that colour and more intense. I even own a few, and a few rough chips in water, like the one Holly showed.
But I agree that it is almost impossible to tell from a photo, you have to move the stone around and look if the colour spots change shape and position.

In general Southwestern US jewellers use lab opals, but there are exceptions.

 

put a better chain on it, and will probably keep/wear for a while, until the magic of a 'new thing' goes

That's a beautiful piece, and a steal at that price.
I live in an area that has several hot spots for opal. I've found lots of common opal and opalized petrified wood while exploring, with some of it edging into precious opal category (if it hasn't been exposed to weathering for very long). I'm hoping to find something worthy of making into jewelry (my wife's domain).

 

Chunks of potch opal can make awesome jewelry.
