    Looks like Incolay. Can we see interior & bottom?

    Agreed with Bronwen--this is Incolay which is not made of a stone but a mixture of crushed minerals and resin. I believe they started making these in the 1970s and you can also find decorative plates. Here are a couple sites about Incolay.

    Thirded. Every teenaged girl had an incolay box on her dresser, gift of somebody, in the early 80s. This one looks larger and nicer, but it's the same stuff.
