Featured Soapstone History

Hi all,

My mom gave me this box and I was trying to find the history or information on it. I know it's soapstone and it's large about 9 inches across. Any information or other places I could find history would be great.

Looks like Incolay. Can we see interior & bottom?

Agreed with Bronwen--this is Incolay which is not made of a stone but a mixture of crushed minerals and resin. I believe they started making these in the 1970s and you can also find decorative plates. Here are a couple sites about Incolay.

 

Thirded. Every teenaged girl had an incolay box on her dresser, gift of somebody, in the early 80s. This one looks larger and nicer, but it's the same stuff.

 

Here's the complete series... maybe that's why I couldn't find anything about soapstone. Most of the soapstone looked like there were tool markings I saw. This seemed too neat. I just really wasn't sure the material at all.

That's exactly it. It's heavy which is why I thought it may be soap stone.
