Just picked this up, appears to be a Naval Dagger? Really bad shape, but I just had to have it. Any idea on the country and age of this? The sheath appears to be leather and brass. Dare I try to clean it up?

not yet...but when ya do,,,,you'll want to be real slow and real careful...

I want size....and if it's possible to lightly disturb the grime and grit on the blade...to source any marks !

Dunno...but it seems to be in the best condition of the entire piece....so I'd rule out natural materiel ...
It looks to be a presentation / Dress piece as opposed to a war weapon , with that over the top decoration....but I'm having trouble finding it.

I'm not even sure where I'm going with this....

The length is 16 inches, the handle is a creamy white in the spots I can see, not celluloid, most likely bone or ivory. I will try to clean it up a bit in the next few days, but I cant see anything on the blade at this point.

My husband has an old Colt leather holster and is is dry and brittle. I did some research on what to do to preserve it. If you look up "leather rot" treatment there are products that libraries use to combat it. I did learn that some of the treatments we use on good leather are bad choices for leather rot so worth researching.

    That's cleaning up nicely,now it's about restoring the blade & leather.If it's looking like a 1-2K piece,might be worth consulting a pro ?

I'm thinking Italian, but which model................?

The gilt parts would clean up with ammonia, and then rinsed with water and dried. For the leather, I would recommend Connolly's Hide Care which I have used for many years now, and I have found nothing better. It was made originally for Rolls Royce, so should be good enough! :)

And a rub with a 'sunshine' cloth will make the gilding shine like new.

Some pics of the leather, really bad shape. I will let the next owner dot the real restoration work. I just picked this one up to sell. Dagger 11.jpg
