It looks like an "@" but it is actually the letter "c". As in, "crawfordsville".

But you are absolutely correct in never assuming something is true, just because it is written on it.

Yup, that's always helpful...as a starting point , because once we see it here it's hard to know who wrote that or when.....

If the writing was signed and dated ...that would go a long way to helping our understanding ........
    just saying..

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

@Lillian Sowa, My paternal Grandmother, who was on crutches most of her life because of "bad hips" they always said, LOVED doing pyrography, but mostly I think did copies of similar from old paintings.......my siblings & I each were the recipients of a couple, one of which I gave to a niece, but here's mine....which I LOVE!!! Gram 'wrote' on the bottom panel in front "Old Friends - Old Pastimes"!!

Almost forgot! She did a 'Smilin' Through' panel on an old breadboard (which I hope I didn't post before!) that's mine, and also painted a few on canvas in oils!! Think my oldest brother got those.....

'Old Friends and Old Pastimes' by Wagner Hoehenberg. Calendar art which would likely been where your grandmother saw it.
