I'm sorry lol Now I get why you called me copycat, I hadn't seen your post. I think Italian, 1830-1890 but could be earlier it's almost impossible to tell who carved it and when. I don't think it's much before 1830 if before at all. Carving is the hardest to date especially Italian carving because of the revival ie they did the same carving in the 19th as they did in the 15th c. I bought a Italian carved plaque and it took me many years to pin it down, I suspect it maybe the same with your chair

I was going to say a double Savonarola chair, both the chair and the portrait being Savonarola, but I see you got there in the end.

I think most joolies have seen it already. It is a stunning piece.

 

Yeah, I wasn't going to post again about the plaque but I didn't have another example of Italian carving and it did take such a long time to pin it down. Don't get me wrong, it is always a joy to see such a work of art. I was merely replying to charlie's post to post it in the jewelry forum.

Is there a way to find out what the asking price was? That could be a start.

Not quite sure what I should be commenting on at this point… If the Savonarola chair, then I’d say it’s ca. 1900. It’s hard to say what it should be worth, since values on some sites are so inflated. Generally, however, most chairs are worth less than you think they should be. The figure of $500 leaps to mind. Beautiful marquetry!

 

I totally agree, I never take a 1st Dibs price as what it's worth. Normally I take the lowest price I can find on the net, like for like, adjust for condition and that's my ball park figure. Sometimes it's hard to find a like for like price and that's when things get impossible, my example of this is the plaque pictured above, I have no clue of it's value, if someone offered £20,000 I'm not sure I would take it because I would be sick if it then sold for £200,000.
