Can a thinning pendant be fixed?

Ah makes sense! Thank you! My last question is, do you think the etchings were made at the time or added later and more recently? I ask as I took it into the jeweller with my ring and wanted to get it cleaned as it's quite tarnished, and he didn't look at the hallmarks but said from looking at it that it wasn't 1940's but 90's/2000's. Perhaps he's wrong, as the locket itself certainly says 1940, but could the etchings be more new?

Done at the time imo. Not etchings though, etching is done using acid, these swans were engraved.
Would have been nice if he had said why. Maybe because it is in good condition? It could have been kept in a box for a long time.

The photo of the swans is not in focus and too dark to really see how the engraving was done.A better photo might help.

I'm sorry, would this photo be any better? It's the only one I have with flash as I won't get it back until next week now.

Ah! Sorry. I didn't realise there was a difference. I hope the engraving is original. I was doing a bit of searching looking at pendants from the time and they have a similar, for lack of better words, stitch-like engraved style. Either way I think it's a super interesting piece, though I wonder if the silver is really is white gold as listed. A person pointed out its not the neatest job and seems amateur, but is that not fading or the style?

I'm not sure. He didn't elaborate but when I said around 1940, he asked why I would say that. I informed him of the hallmarks and he just hmm'd and said I'm being hopeful and it's more likely to be 90's/2000's. The conversion ended there as we wrapped up and to be honest, he's not the most conversational person. Fantastic jeweller as I've used him previously, yet strange guy. He has his shop labelled with little signs on things which may be conversation points. E.g. he has a 1888 clock, which is labelled as "This is an 1888 clock". On his doorbell to get in, it says "The doorbell, where else would it be?". I suppose he just gets asked a ton of questions and so he doesn't have to explain, he just labels everything.

Looks like it is made of rolled gold/gold filled metal with a silver center layer. The outside border and swan necks were wriggle engraved, the straight lines with a line graver. It does look like an amateur did the engraving.

Sounds like he is arrogant as well as ignorant.
But as long as he does a good job on the cleaning, right?;)

It isn’t rolled gold, it has full British hallmarks, which rolled gold and gold filled here most certainly do not. If the layer shows white, it will be white gold.

The engraving is typical of relatively mass market pieces of the time, which is not to denigrate it at all.

That jeweller is an idiot, frankly. I’d be very worried about the fact he didn’t see the full hallmarks.

Oh, and if it’s tarnished, buy a Sunshine cloth on eBay, that will fix it fine.

    Ditto.
I never pay for jewellery to be cleaned, a small piece like this takes less than a minute to clean with a sunshine cloth.

Yup. I’ve assorted cleaning things, including an ultrasound bath. Sunshine cloths are always my first thing. They’re great on gold.
