My wife and I are seriously downsizing, which means I'm refining my small collection. I inherited these two platters, but I don't know anything about them. The larger of the two (shown first) has been in the family since before living memory. The family story is that it's an ancestor of mine, in Virginia. It's 19 3/4 by 16 1/2 inches, and has an ancient repair. I'd like to know it's age, and who the maker might be.

The second is by Limoges, but I don't know enough about Limoges to determine the age. I'm hoping the collective wisdom here can help me with that. It may or may not stay with me. This one is 16 by 12 1/2 inches.

Your purple transferware is Staffordshire from the early 1800s.

There are several for sale on ebay with prices ranging from 500-1400 for good condition.
Yours is damaged so cuts the value way down.

However, there are people who collect staple repaired pottery.
This type of repair wasn't done much after 1900.

The top Guerin mark means they made the blank, and the bottom mark means they also decorated it, 1900-1927. I found this pattern on the replacements site as GUE32.

I think old staple repairs may not be too bad, but I don’t know too much about it.

Since it's a staple repair, it might even help given the way the market is going. I once bought a plate because it had a staple repair rather than for the plate. A staple repair on a cheap plate means there was a story somewhere.

That's about what I suspected. Thanks for the confirmation.

Love the repair and plate :)

Are you related to Quaker preacher and anti-slavery activist Richard Jordan (1756-1826), @Frank?

I don't know, where did he live? The Jordan's I'm descended from were Virginians.

    Why I asked :)

Richard Jordan (1756-1826) was born into a Quaker family in Norfolk county in the colony of Virginia, on the nineteenth of the twelfth month 1756, the son of Joseph and Patience Jordan.

I don't know if we're related or not. I'll have to do some research.

The family tradition has always been that if you pronounce the name Jordan like "jerdan" we're probably related. My grandmother told me it was an Anglicized pronunciation of the French name Jourdan.

Family histories can be inaccurate but at least yours has some promise. Please let us know what you find out, this could lead you into a whole new interest - genealogy!
