    Hi all,

Here is another one of my finds. From my research i have found out that these are lac work boxes from sindh, but i cannot find any similar eg of these stacking boxes to compare them to.i think they date to 19th century or early 20th century.they all sit or stack into eachother.

Does anyone here have any knowledge or expertise on these?sorry pictures are not against plain white backgrounds. 20210526_192747_resize_83.jpg 20210526_192928_resize_70.jpg 20210526_193029_resize_21.jpg 20210710_161109_resize_67.jpg 20210710_165732_resize_73.jpg Screenshot_20230920-192700_Gallery_resize_52.jpg

Had to look up Sindh, a province in Pakistan. The site of Mohenjo-Daro, a city with a population of 40,000... 4500 years ago.

Those are cool! But I have no idea if they are 50 years old or made last year, LOL! The design on them looks to have some Persian influence.

Thats alot of money to ask for an old box!My boxes look to be slightly different in shape and have a bit of damage to some of them tho
Not much research done on most of my stuff but im starting now to do alot more with the great help here. When i pick up my stuff i usually put it straight in the attic or out in garage so its out of site because my wife gets anoyed when she sees it come into the house.i

Martin - if you have been doing your research on the web, it might be helpful if you could post some links for us so we could follow up on your work. The costume of the riders on the red and green box does not look Pakistani or Indian, with the high crown, wide brimmed hats and boots - more Central Asian to my eye. But I have been trying to determine where a combination of that type of costume, with camels and horses, might occur where lacquer is also used. Is there a chance that the decoration is simply painted, rather than lacquer?

Martin-You sound like an undercover picker.Hopefully you can start generating some cash soon from your obsession-a good spouse is a comfort.
PS-I recall someone here mentioning an Estate Sale where a fellow sort of became estranged from his family (Wife & kids),so he could devote more time & space to collecting.
He did end up alone but with a house stuffed w/ toys.

It is a charming set, probably meant to store tea and spices. Wonderful to have such a large set.
I think you're right about the region and the date.
Lacquer is made in several regions of Pakistan, Kashmore in Sindh is one of them. The lacquer made there tends to have a more naive, 'folksy' decoration than in other regions of Pakistan and India.
Also, the dromedaries point to an arid region, part of the Thar Desert is in Kashmore.
I think that box is from Rajasthan. Rajasthan is just east of Kashmore, in neighbouring India.

Most Indian lacquer is from Kashmir, so that is the first association people have. But India has several lacquer manufacturing regions, just like Pakistan does.
Kashmiri lacquer designs are more Mughal/Indo-Persian than the ones on that box.
