Sounds like 8k, which was used in Germany.

Or gold filled which could first look good but then fade.

I did try to rub firmly to get through any plating or rolling.

    Should I try again? I wouldn't mind 8k

Gold-filled fades and I'm told turns color under the acid. Most gold-filled items are 1/12 12k but occasionally you'll find 14kgf. If it's holding and then dissolving with 10k acid or 9k, I'd be guessing it's 8 or 9 karat.

Well it definitely wasn't turning any funny colours, so great! It won't be too hard holding it in my gold store :joyful:

    Thanks very much all!

Something keeps bothering me about the brooch, the way the bar is turned over on either end. I know it's a low karat, and back in the day gold wasn't as precious as it is now, but that seems like an odd construction choice?

    Also the pearl is real:joyful:

Its a knot, its constructed to be a knot, what exactly is wrong according to you?
I mean, if I were a jeweler (which I am not, I m just a collector, to be clear!) I think this is the way I would make this kind of brooch, nice and sturdy.

It seems like its using an overabundance of material. I'd have thought gold would have been used more efficiently than this, but perhaps that is just for fine jewelry and not necessarily gold jewelry? All fine jewelry is gold but not all gold is fine? That sort of thing.

It was more expensive back in the day, compared to the wages people earned. But 8k is not really used now, if that is what you mean.
    I don't quite see it, Rachel.

These bits here. I would have thought that when using gold, you just round it off than use extra to do something like that. I've just not seen this in precious metal jewelry!

It is an efficient way of making it, I wouldn't worry about it.;)

Remember that gold hasn’t always been as costly as it is now. And that type of construction is easily done and quickly.

Yep that was my thought, but wanted to make sure! The more you know.

    Thanks again all!
