Are those paste or real diamonds ? Not a mourning jewelry fan,or I should say hair jewelry, but this is lovely.

    Paste? An' seed-pearls with hair?
Were they man & wife, or 2 children ~11 years apart?
My, oh my...things were so very different then.
    That's worth an early-up, I'm convinced...Thank you, OBB!

Proper black dot paste, set in silver with a gold frame and back. I think the brooch is older than the death dates, it looks Georgian.

I nearly fell over. Very nice woman, who normally sells household odds and sods, was clearing out her collection of jewellery. This was an indoor car boot, mostly new and tat, but oh my days. I asked how much it was and hastily paid over the eight quid before she could change her mind. I'd hardly looked at it, but the inscription was enough. She also sold me a Scottish hardstone brooch, a gold bar one and a nice NA ring. I think her taste is as eclectic as mine.

I think Bear's dead on about the inscriptions being later. Someone had a mourning brooch (oh my stars and garters ) and added the names to the back later. That pin has to be 200 years old.

Yup, I'm thinking early nineteenth. I keep staring at it. The condition is astonishing. It's also BIG. And heavy too.

I wonder if Joseph and Harriet realised people would still be cherishing it 200 years down the line. Nice piece of social history.

Isn’t it just. I need someone with an Ancestry subscription!

Me Ma is into her family tree. I will ask her if she has a subscription to it. That said, with it being as old as it is, the info maybe easily available for free on birth death marriage websites. The premium data is usually that which has just entered the public domain i.e just turned 100. Worth a look on freebmd.org.uk and such like

    Good thinking, I’ll try those.

This may be my find of the year, unless something mega shows up tomorrow.

This is the kind of thing I will never find where I'm at--no matter how early! :playful: Super jealous of your find and 8 is astounding!! I'm very much agreed on it being Georgian with those collets. I immediately thought "That has to be a re-purposed piece".

Hoping you'll share the other bits too so I can keep being jealous. :p I love a good Scottish hardstone brooch.

    I found a Joseph Haycock (b. 1811) marrying a Harriet Jackson (b. 1790) in Norwich, Norfolk. Died 1850.
