Not quite that. It was OK for me as a little kid when I didn't know any better. I'm guessing they wanted a song and dance man who could act, accent less important. He's almost 100 and still working occasionally.

 

Some of the grocery cashiers in Haarlem imitated BBC presenters-sounded convincing to me.Agree Van Dyke was absurd-stick to comedic dancing.

 

Dutch people like to play around with languages and accents.
My parents were experts at making fun sentences that were a mix of two or three languages. The only one I can remember right now is "nichts verstehen, je suis Néerlandais".

 

The scary part is I put sentances of that sort together early and often.

 

When we were living in Australia, my brother and I spoke a mix of English and Dutch. It continued for years after we were back in Europe, and we still do it sometimes, whichever word or term feels easiest to use.

 

You should hear London speak.

 

I used to work with a couple of guys from DR Congo and they used to speak a dialect that was a corruption of French, Spanish and something else. That was odd listening to.

 

I’ll see your DR Congo and raise you quebecois.

I used to hear a fair bit of that here. Lots of Quebecers came South during one war or another for work and stayed put. Congolese is harder to come by, although I've at least heard the accent.

 

I can understand different French accents, love to hear Walloon French (that wonderful r!) and Provençal French, but can't understand Quebecois at all.

 

It’s nigh on impenetrable. I do scratch my head slightly at some heavy languedoc and Catalan accents, but I can understand them fine. Quebecois is a different planet.

African French I can understand perfectly, it’s often very pure.

 

And they place a similar emphasis on certain syllables as in African English.

 

Meryl Streep does accents very well in my opinion.
