This is a very fine portrait which is for sale locally. It is watercolour on pencil and is a large size. I've spent hours trying to decipher the signature but failed so I am turning to the forum. It is most likely English but could be French. The sitter is wearing expensive clothes and jewellery in a style of c1840.

It's a long shot but any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance

    John

It’s a name I tried but found no known artists.

Is she only of interest if the artist is known? I agree with others, lovely.

    Screenshot_20231028_201118_Samsung Internet.jpg Best I can come up with is a English 19 ct artist J Perkins.Very little info or works,might be a possibility.Think I can see a J then P both in capitals.

Wow. Beautiful portrait. Great quality. The face, eyes and other details such as the dress are all captured so well.

When I go back and look and insert "Perkins" that Antiquefab suggested, does look like that could be the name. Also some similarities in the work.

  17. Aquitaine

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

That is SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! HER EYES ARE PIERCING!!!! But now aside from that, I took @Any Jewelry's stab at the signature, and did what I do, but tried to trace in white, most of the white lines (which they turned when I inverted the signature) I saw.....most of what I thought were 'swirls' I did NOT trace....I know, I could be way off, but it looked to me like the signature might start with (in script)... J Prathis...and added swirls around the siggy. Best I could come up with! THAT is ONE tough signature, that maybe none of have gotten yet!!!

And after I finished I thought more about it and thought ...... I just did a simple "today" style plain printing.....something they wouldn't have done in the 1850's....I don't think.....even though all I did was copy what I saw.....
