What kind of stones are these?

I've no clue what these are - just put them in lot at auction because they intrigued me. Maybe some kind of hand cooler? Each one is about 3 1/2" long and has a flattened bottom so they'll stand up. The rock or stone appears to be in strata form, but I really don't know what they are or what they'd be used for.

    Thank you for your help!

Wow-you may be onto something! Hadn't thought about wood, but since they're lightweight, about 4 oz each, they very well could be wood.

I hadn't thought about petrified wood, but my question was going to be 'are you sure they're STONE'? On the other hand, I don't know WHAT they are, but they DO look layered....almost intentionally!! They're Beautiful!!! I'm shooting for man-made.........but I don't know what!!!!!!!!!!!!

    They look rather like operculum.

Horn is another possibility! They’re very smooth, but definitely layered. I think I’ll take them to a jewelry store and see what they think.

Me, too...but then I read 4 oz each. That would be a large operculum with an appropriately humongous gastropod behind it...South Pacific, maybe?

Look like laminated wood to me, with some kind of sealant/coating.

My thought too. That or some sort of horn.

Reminds me of the laminated wood that Frost Cutlery uses for their knife handles but does have the colors of horn.
