Cool piece Rob.I assume you found this in Civil War territory ? By the way-have you identified the belt plate(s) or pistol in the dig pic ?

 

Yes, the pistol is a Model 1858 Remington I believe, with 5 balls still in the cylinder.
The one buckle is a Knights of Maccabees buckle.

 

What state did you find these in please?

what's with the dog tags ??

 

Very cool finds! I found a pistol once as well with my metal detector! That was probably a WW II relic.

 

The original house on the property where this was dug was built in 1794 and saw occupation until the early1950s. There was a newer house on the property that saw occupation until the 1970s, when the place was destroyed by fire. I traced the name on the dog tags, and they were returned to a family member.

 

if the rounds are still in the chambers......is there any chance the primer and powder are not quite inert ?

I am sure it saw some troop movement, as it wasn't too far removed from the Valley Campaigns.

I know what you mean. I find myself thinking the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, but never go without the blessings of the landowners.

 

That's a good practice for all relic hunters,bottle diggers,and everyone else.
