I picked up this from the scrap frame pile in a charity shop as it looked interesting. It is a book page taken from Isolario del P Coronelli. Badly cut out and defaced but interesting none the less. The paper is like very thick artists paper. The subject matter is a wonderful artistic impression of a naval bunfight with all the ships ambitiously labelled with their position in the battle. Could this be from an original 1696 book? Are there collectors of this sort of stuff or has it become worthless being removed from the book and defaced? It was in a frame but very amateurishly done. I have no idea about this sort of thing so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou
Great item and research!!! It seems it was made with a plaque engraving pressed on the paper, I can see the pression trace of the plaque on the page, so not a reprint IMO
That’s useful information Kyra, Thankyou. It’s been interesting researching it, you never know what an oddity is going to teach you as I ignorantly had never heard of Coronelli
Very nice find, K. Sometimes it is not about monetary value, but about educational value or historic interest. Google is correct, for once. Isolarios were originally made to map the many islands in the Mediterranean, hence the Italian term.
Here's another, in a different context, that the British Museum says is c1700: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_Qq-6J-54
Thankyou MOS, Very helpful! Definitely! A few well aimed scones and rock cakes would soon sort out any squabbles
