You guys know I don't have a clue about glassware/ceramics. This was too beautiful to leave behind for $8....maybe I could find one intact if I know what it is. Thanks. Lumii_20231004_174426939.jpg Lumii_20231004_174431690.jpg Lumii_20231004_174448327.jpg

Glorious enamelling. Mid nineteenth I’d think. Japanese and the term has left my head,

I think ginbari is the term?

It's very beautiful! I think I can forgive the damage. The ladies' style of dress is Chinese. What a sinuous shape!
For $8, I woulda jumped at it, too!

Yes, it is inspired by Chinese dress. In the 7th century Chinese style dress and hairdo were fashionable in Japan.
Japanese Goddesses can also be depicted in this historic way.

That’s it, ginbari. The faces are very Japanese.

Yes they are, especially those puffy cheeks.
It is definitely a Japanese vase, with the ladies wearing 7th century dress and hairstyle. That style dress is confusing, but it was Japanese fashion in early times.

You can display it with the damaged side to the wall. I see that the neck has darkened as well.

It looks like the cracked out area has tarnished.
I might try Tarn-X (applied with a small paint brush)followed by light blue frosted nail polish. You have nothing to lose.

Maybe @kyratango has some better suggestions for repairs!

    kyratango Bug jewellery addiction!

Polish the damages to white and shiny!
That will improve by making them less visible.
If you decide to try some color, first seal the edges with colorless varnish otherwise the colors will pass under the existing!

Unless you're Kyra I'd leave bad enough alone when it comes to repairs. Polishing the damaged area would be a good idea though. Just in case the tarnish gets big ideas and wants to spread under the enamel.

It's too fragile to polish...the glaze easily flakes off.

In that case I'd leave it alone.:oops:

I would put transparent nailpolish on the edges of the damage to try and stabilize it, but let's wait for kyra.
