I was trying to read the title on the print and was only getting as far as "Hagar and her Son".

With Fig's info, I think it does say A. van Dyck where one would expect to see the artist's name.

Good! I hadn't been able to see it well enough to tell.

There's one interesting difference: in the print, Ishmael is looking back at Isaac, not leading on.

Afraid it rings no bells for me. It's tricky, but you may be able to get a photo if taken at the right angle.

At the time of the sending, he was about 102. About 86 when Ishmael was born. He and Sara were older parents to say the least. Long story about doing the Dumb omitted. Sara and Abraham were past masters.

The mistake people make is that the Bible isn't a science book; it's history and instructions on how to follow God and treat each other.

Understatement! Isaac was no great shakes either, and his son Jacob.. dude couldn't have screwed it up worse if he'd been trying. Plenty of fodder for artwork there, mostly of the "what NOT to do" variety.

Again, sources differ, but none of it is factual anyway.
Exactly. And mostly how not to treat each other.;)

    Great finds, @Bronwen !

Several sites say the painting by Philip Van Dijk is in the Louvre. I haven't been able to find it on their website.

Here is one that shows the painting, attributes it to Philip Van Dijk and even gives the Louvre's inventory/item number. It says there is also a pendant/ companion piece, so possibly a diptych? https://rkd.nl/en/explore/images/1701

    And the prequel companion piece:

Yes, it has been! And thanks to @Simona Buhus for starting this conversation and being so tolerant of the extended exploration!

Looks like 7-8 or 7-B to me. More likely to be an inventory number or price code. Not random scratches, but not a signature, IMO. It's hard to shake the belief that really good work should be signed, but most of it is not.

Looks like H-B or H-6 to my eyes (which aren't too good).
    Ditto.

The carver’s legacy will remain, as @Bronwen put it “did hands unusually well.”
It’s worth tagging it as such, in case we come across similar works.
Thank you all, this has been a great exploration.
