    Hello,
The attached bracelet and earrings were in a lot of Whitby Jet and am wondering what are they and how old.
They do not look like Whitby jet, but it feels that they have some age to it.
There was a note in the box “grandma Whitby Jet”
The other items are Whitby, but I doubt these are.
They look like black beads to me.
    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Simona

Not for the first & not for the last time: I hate black stuff! When it comes to photographing & to trying to figure out what something is with only pix to go by.

I would guess the black stones in the bracelet are 'French jet,' i.e., black glass. The earrings look like they could be small jet beads strung & coiled around. Or could be glass. But they do strike me as jet, FWIW.

That, and clear glass is a nightmare.

Simona, you need a bit of unglazed white ceramic like the underside of a loo cistern lid. If you very gently rub suspected jet on it, you get a brown smear. It’s soft. Bracelet does look glass.

Probably both glass, but the test will tell you.
The bracelet looks Art Deco, the earrings are later imo, 1950s-60s.

Brilliant, thank you so much, I have never seen this work on something that looks like a net. Are they hand made?
I will take some more photos of the earrings and bracelet tomorrow waring them.
Would anybody be interested to see the other pieces as well?
    Thank you.
    Xx

Yes, the beading is done by hand. Labour was cheaper then.

My grandmother had many pairs of similarly constructed clip ons, clusters of beads.

The bracelet is made from sew-on flat-back rhinestones and black glass bugle beads--most likely home made in the 1950s. The clasp looks like it could be sterling, and was probably recycled from an older necklace (it's not the type used on bracelets). The photo below shows a package of the same type of sew-on rhinestones with the crisscross tunnels on the back for a threaded needle to go through. The packaged rhinestones are a slightly newer version--probably 1960s.

    Good evening,

Here is the rest, they are large pieces, hope they are clear. It’s a snake bracelet, two necklaces and a brooch. If anyone wants to see more photos, please let me know, I will post. What are your thoughts with regards to the box?
I can’t find the initial bracelet and earrings, I am known to throw things away, Covid cleaning mania, sorry.

Surely you give them away, rather than throw them away?:nailbiting:

Can’t find them any more, it did happened in the past to find bits in the bin, mind you, I have small children, they find jewellery interesting toys, make me question my memory sometimes where I have placed them, lol.
Took them to Louvre this year, that’s another story to tell, lol.

    Here are some more photos.

Gorgeous, Simona. The snake bracelet is very likely Whitby jet, and the other pieces could be as well.
Always good to start young, even if just for ten minutes or so. See what they can handle, and make sure they don't see it as a playground but something to explore with eyes only. They'll learn, as long as you do it in small "bites".

I agree, that snake looks like a cracking good Victorian one. The brooch looks good too.
