Featured Blue and White Marine/Port Scene Hot Plate

I didn't quite know where to put this, but I hope this is the correct forum!

I 'splurged' at 7 euros, but I just adore this hot plate. I'd love to know more about it, as like the copper tankard thingy, I know pretty much zero about porcalain/tiles.

Is it possible to estimate the age and origin for this? I've not cleaned it up yet, this is the condition I bought it in. There is a crack on the bottom right corner, but otherwise its just the glaze. The wood and nails on the back look antique to me (my expertise? The tiny bit of lurking on the furniture threads I've done ). It hadn't occured to me that it wouldn't be handpainted, but when I looked up close I think I can see tiny dots, meaning transfer ware? Not sure, would love more experienced eyes on my treasure! Thank you all!

It's a little trivet. And can't get more Art Nouveau than that. Here's a duplicate tile in an etsy.com listing that may answer some of your questions.

Oh how lovely! Thank you very much Debora! Nice to know the maker as well, that hadn't occured to me. It shall be lovingly tucked away until I have a place of my own.

 

The iris was a very popular Art Nouveau design motif. The swallow has symbolic meaning, especially when associated with boats.

Oh is it a swallow? It looked like a Tern to me. Good to know about the Iris!

 

Swallow and iris on a 19th century woodblock print by Hiroshige. Japanese prints such as this one were were an important source of Art Nouveau motifs.
