I picked up this pitcher at a secondhand store near the fingerlakes of NY. It is 7" high. I just couldn't leave the store without it. There is a signature which I cannot make out. Needs a really good cleaning also. toledo1.jpg toledo2.jpg toledo3.jpg

It's says "S' and "Toledo." Someone brought back a little souvenir from Spain.

Similar ware is made by Sanguino but it's typically fully signed. The form is a jarra or -- wait for it! -- pitcher in English.

That is funny. I always though Spanish was a lovely language. A little girl (said she was tres anos) was on a flight with me wanted to count for me. Her Dad was in front of us. I said to her, you speak Spanish, because that is how she was counting. Her Dad was not happy. He said, she does not speak Spanish, that is Portuguese. I told him I was sorry, I didn't mean to offend. He got over it quickly probably because I was entertaining his child so he could watch his movie.

Not your fault. Tres años and tres ânos don't sound that different. The two countries (Spain and Portugal) just don't have a natural affinity. The Spanish feel closer in culture and values to Italy.

To us Dutch the Portuguese are roughly the same as us, just further south.:playful:

Think, as long as they're not compared to the Spanish, they're happy.

My favourite sign in Lisbon was the one telling people not to be loud at night because this is not Spain.

it’s a very zhzzzhhhhy language. Vowels more like Catalan too.

The Portuguese says their spoken language reflects the sound of the sea as they're a seafaring nation. Sounds like Polish to me. But true that Portuguese has a much wider range of vowels than Spanish.

The Dutch are a seafaring nation, but Dutch sounds nothing like Portuguese.
Coastal Dutch tend to speak louder, and we always say that they have to shout against a sea storm, so there is a seafaring element there.:D
