I don't recall seeing the advertising on the button itself. The ones I've seen had it on a card. Once separated...

Look for the union bug ( or year of repop ) on the edge or back. Nearly all political buttons were union made.

The old(sic) ones printed on steel are not right. They should be on celluloid.

Amateur political button collector here. So please don't take the following as gospel. eBay completed sales would be a good place to research prices.

Like others have said there are some reproductions from the 1960's and 70's that were given away as promotional items from gas stations. The reproductions usually say the name of the candidate and the year that they ran on the outside edge of the button. So for Goldwater the reproductions would say "Goldwater 1964".

A paper label on the back is common for buttons before the 1920's. The biggest manufacturer of this era is the Whithead & Hoag company. In political buttons, the age of the button and its scarcity generally determines value. So if you have an unusual button it may be worth more. I'll group these items in tiers from most interesting to least.

Tier 1: I too like the Dewey Elephant and the Woodrow Wilson pin. Wilson pins seem to command some fairly good values. The 1908 pin and ribbon in the 2nd set of photos looks Theodore Roosevelt so its older and more collectable. Coolidge, Harding, and Landon pins are common but they might have some value. Check eBay completed sales.

Tier 2: Dewey, Eisenhower, and Nixon pins are very common and are probably worth less then $5 each (retail) to a collector. Governor's races are usually a bit less collectable I'd but the Beckman pin here even though it is a older/less common pin than the others mentioned here.

Tier 3: Red Cross, Liberty Loans, War Savings Pins. Very common and not really very collectable. Retail value of a few dollars each at best.

Don't really know much about the advertising pins. I have some Audubon pins similar to yours in my collection. I think they are very common and not worth much. I got mine as throw-ins in a lot with other pins I wanted.

King....don't take me too seriously!!! Just my way of saying the other half has a difficult time parting with things!!!! And I try (desperately sometimes) to keep it from getting too cluttered around here!!!!:joyful::joyful::joyful:

    Thank you!
The spacing makes me believe the T was missed in the strike. It should be TER.

WHOA!!!! Thank you Bakers!!! Lots of info there to read too!!! So as an aside, that was a pretty large picture I had to post of the batch of Union Label pins....why did it get so reduced in size, and why are others posted right on the site in huge pics???
    Anybody have an answer??? Thanks!!
