I picked this off the charity shop shelf this morning, and I think it is old and rare, full of bubble, weighs a ton, and has a large pontil scar.

Photograph [No.5], showing the edge of the foot, displays both a bubble and a piece of slag.

What do you think? Please let me know what type knop, stem, cup, age, etc. And whether this is bubble glass or glass with bubbles?

    Height 17.2 cm
    Rim diameter 8.6 cm
    Foot diameter 8.9 cm
    Weight 490 grams

    Over to you.

    On June 27, I posted
Green Goblets - Modern, Vintage or Antique?
I have now found out from a website that buys and sells 19th Century glaas that the are most probably 19th Century Bristol Green Rummers.

My first reaction to those was Mexican glass, but someone who's an expert may think something else.

Looks more like recycled glass from Valencia, Spain. Here's something similar. Ah, but those are molded. The pontil does point toward México.

Soda glass and it’s not a Rummer shape.

Thought the shape was off, but all I know of British glass I learned from Mother Beeb, so...(LOL) Suspect source, much?

I should have said the the bubbly glass was bought in France, but Rummers are a German invention for drinking wheat beer. Assuming it is a rummer; it certainly looks like one.

I don't know about Soda Glass. What tests can I make?

From the bottom view, it appears to be not very old at all, with no wear on the standing rim and no discoloration or mineral deposits on the interior from use. I really don't know how old it could be bc glass like this could have been made thick glass with bubbles at any point in time. The pontil is not well finished, and what is there appears to be finished by a crude hand holding a small machine. It looks like a chip in the bottom rim where the dremel tool (or whatever tool) ran off the edge. Is this the case? I have tried to indicate where it appears to be a scratch mark and chip.

Agree that it doesn't appear to be very old.

If I saw it here I'd say Pier One and keep moving.

Is that because it has a "Capstan Stem".

It's because it looks like things I saw in Pier One in years past. I have no idea what a Capstan stem is, but this has a Mexican bubble pattern.

Agreed it can be from Pier One in a heartbeat. Agree with Debora looks like Mexican used glass and def could have a drip of slag picked up in it. As I said, I don't know how old it is and I guess you posted a photo of the pontil that made it appear to have been badly finished. Nevertheless I cannot say it is well finished, it is not. True antiques tend to have well finished details. Good for you to mention and show the lime ring, but had you shown it from the start, you'd not have tossed me or anyone else off, however, I still wouldn't date this past 1980 and Pier One Imports.

Yes, I DO suggest you attempt to remove the lime scale ring. Why doesn't it show up in your photos?
